Pre-Releases & Sealed

Ideals: Similar to Draft - Discovery, Novelty, and Ingenuity

Why Play Sealed or a Pre-release Event ?

Like Draft, Sealed is a “limited” format in which players build a deck out of sealed boosters using 6 sealed Play Boosters or a Pre-release Kit. Pre-releases are special events held at LUG to celebrate a new set. LUG is able to start selling a new set at open on the day the first pre-release is held at that location.

Think of them like a party where players get their hands on the set for the first time!

Pre-release FAQs

  • A casual MTG eevent where you build and play with cards from youe event kit containing extra goodies and booster packs from the set. See more info on pre-releases on Wizard of the Coast’s website here.

  • It’s called a pre-release as Wizards of the Coast has local game shop programs which allow us to sell items before the global release date for a set.

  • You just need to bring yourself and the MTG Companion App on your phone; however, we recommend bringing your own tokens and sleeves as well.

  • Sleeves are available, but tokens are not always available. Extra dice or empty sleeves are good alternatives.

  • Yes, basic lands are provided. It’s a huge help to the store if you donate/return basic lands at MTG events.

  • Pre-releases are fantastic events for new & experienced players. However, we strongly reccomend a firm grasp on the basics of MTG before playing in a pre-release. Come play a few games at our weekly events to prepare or watch a tutorial.

  • 1.) The MTG Companion App on your phone and an account.

2.) A ticket to the event purchased on our Eventbrite or in-store the day of the event.

Commander

Commander:

Ideals: Creativity, Self Expression, & Community

Why Play Commander?

It’s the premier way to enjoy MTG with a group. Your cards never rotate.

Pre-constructed decks are available at LUG, which get you playing ASAP!

The Basics:

1.) Color Identity: All your deck’s cards must use or be cast with generic mana or the same colored mana as your commander

2.) Deck Size: Including the commander, decks must be 100 unique cards (excluding basic lands).

3.) Command Zone: A special place on the board where your commander is located face-up. You can always cast your commander from this zone. You can always return your commander to this zone when it is put somewhere else, such as when it enters the graveyard when destroyed.

4.) Commander Damage: If a specific commander has dealt 21 damage to a player, that player is defeated.

5.) Multiplayer: Typical commander games are played between 4 players in a free-for-all style.

6.) Life Total: Each player starts with 40 life rather than the typical 20.

Standard

Standard:

Ideals: Innovation, Competition, and Adaptation

Why Play Standard?

Standard focuses on the newest sets of Magic that “rotate” once per year in the Fall. This means players can hone their skills with their decks, experiment with exciting new cards as set release, and innovate new strategies unique to Standard’s card pool.

The Basics:

1.) Deck Size: 60+ card decks with no more than 4 copies of each card (excluding basic lands).

2.) Cards must be from Standard Legal Sets you can see here.

3. Sideboard: Each player may have up to 15 cards in their Sideboard, a group of cards that can be used to modify their deck in between games of a match.

What to Start with in Standard?

MTG: Foundations is a special set that is meant to serve as, well, the foundation of Standard through 2029. This extended time in Standard makes it the perfect set to grab as a new MTG player.

Draft

<

Draft:

“Draft to me, or limited, is the platonic ideal of magic.”

- Jay, Johns Creek MTG Drafter

Ideals: Discovery, Novelty, and Ingenuity

Why Play Draft?

In drafts, players discover a new set and think on their feet as they build a fresh deck out of booster packs.. Drafting is incredibly rewarding for players who enjoy deck building, discovering strategies, and thinking on their feet. It’s also a fun way to collect a new set!

The Basics:

1.) Deck Size: 40+ card decks with no more than 4 copies of each card (excluding basic lands). LUG provides basic lands if you need more.

2.) Building a Deck: Each player will select one card from their first pack, then pass it to the player next to them as they get a pack from another player. This process continues until 3 packs have been opened by players, alternating which direction cards are passed.

3.) What do you draft with? Players should use Play Booster Packs when drafting or Draft Booster Packs for older sets, which Play Boosters have replaced.
